Trade and economic relations between Ukraine and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan
The main mechanism of cooperation is the Ukrainian-Afghan Joint Intergovernmental Commission on trade and economic cooperation. The lastmeetings have been held: the first - on May 26-29, 2019 in Kyiv; the second also in the Ukrainian capital - on March 10, 2021.
There is a potential interest in increasing the volume of bilateral trade, in particular, the supply of Ukrainian agricultural goods to the IRA, Ukrainian meat, butter, sugar, confectionery, medicines and equipment (tractors), civil aircraft construction, establishing cooperation in the field of communications and IT technologies, etc., as well as the export of Afghan goods to Ukraine.
Ukraine has the necessary potential to participate in the implementation of important investment projects for Afghanistan. Ukrainian specialists can take part in the construction of the Afghan section of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan Railway, the construction of planned hydroelectric power plants on the Panj River. These projects could also use Ukrainian equipment and equipment. Ukraine has the necessary opportunities to expand Ukrainian-Afghan cooperation in the field of education and is ready to continue training Afghan students in Ukrainian higher education institutions.
On August 27 2020 a memorandum was signed via videoconference between the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and industry and the IRA on the establishment of a Ukrainian trading house in the IRA
In addition, the creation of the Ukrainian-Afghan Business Council, which will contribute to the activation of bilateral economic dialogue, is also a positive result.
It should be noted that the difficult security and terrorist situation in Afghanistan continue to negatively affect the establishment of effective interaction between the parties in this area to a certain extent.
At the same time, despite the Pandemic, there was an intensification of trade and economic relations.
During 2020, exports from Ukraine to Afghanistan amounted to 6.858 million US dollars. This represents 200.5% compared to the same period last year. The basis of Ukrainian exports were products of the sugar group and confectionery products made from it.
In 2020, Afghanistan exported goods worth 2 291,1 thousand US dollars to Ukraine. This represents 200% compared to the same period in 2019. The main Afghan exports to Ukraine were products of the edible fruits and nuts group.
The balance is positive and amounts to 6.567 million US dollars.
At the same time, there was a certain change in the nomenclature of Ukrainian exports. In particular, as before, the highest indicator was "sugar and confectionery products made from sugar". But now there is an appearance of the position "meat and edible offal" (exports exceeded the amount of 652 thousand US dollars). The previously mentioned position was missing. The basis of Afghan exports to Ukraine has traditionally been edible fruits and nuts.
