Diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan were established on April 17, 1995.
In 2002, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Ukraine was opened in the capital of Ukraine.
The diplomatic functions of Ukraine in Afghanistan are performed by the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (concurrently).
During the period of existence of diplomatic relations between our States a number of visits and meetings were held at the level of delegations of ministries and departments of the parties:
- August 27, 2003-official visit to Ukraine of the Minister of foreign Affairs of Afghanistan A. Abdulla, and April 4, 2004-official visit to Afghanistan of the Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine K. I. Grishchenko. During the visit, a Protocol on cooperation between the foreign Ministries of both countries was signed;
- July 13-14, 2007-working visit of the Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine A. p. Yatsenyuk to Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. During the visit, meetings were held with President of Afghanistan H. Karzai, foreign Minister of Afghanistan G. D. Spanta, and defense Minister A. Wardak.
- In 2012, the President of Ukraine met with the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan at the meeting of the Heads of state and government of the contributing countries of the International security assistance force (may 21, 2012, Chicago).
The Ukrainian Ambassador to Tajikistan and the IRA carried out regular business trips to the IRA, during which meetings are held with state officials to discuss topical issues of bilateral relations.
In November 2018, during a business trip to Afghanistan, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Tajikistan and Afghanistan Viktor Nikitiuk was received by the Ira President A. Ghani, and also held talks with the IRA foreign Minister S. Rabbani.
On January 9, 2020, a telephone conversation took place between the President of Ukraine V. A. Zelensky and the President of Afghanistan A. Ghani.
At the present stage of bilateral relations between Ukraine and Afghanistan, there are no political problems that lay the Foundation for strengthening and developing Ukrainian-Afghan relations.
