Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Ukraine were established on April 24, 1992.
The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan was opened in the capital of Ukraine in December 2010, and the Embassy of Ukraine began to operate in the Republic of Tajikistan from October 2012.
More than seventy signed bilateral interstate documents covering a wide range of cooperation contribute the development and strengthening of Ukrainian-Tajik relations and make it possible to fully develop mutually beneficial relations. Particularly important among these documents is the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Ukraine and the Republic of Tajikistan signed on July 6, 2001.
The visits of states' heads of the two countries contributed to the significant deepening cooperation between Ukraine and Tajikistan. On March 6-7 2008 the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko made an official visit to the Republic of Tajikistan, and on December 3-5, 2008, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon visited Ukraine on a state visit.
The visits of Tajikistan's head to Ukraine have become the positive impulse to further development of Ukrainian-Tajik relations. An official visit of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to Ukraine was on December 15-16, 2011, and the working one on June 30 - July 1, 2012. During these visits, the two leaders signed a number of important documents aimed at development and strengthening of bilateral cooperation in various fields.
On 15-16 of october, 2013, the OSCE Chairman, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine L.O. Kozhar had a working visit to the Republic of Tajikistan, in which he was received by President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon. L.O.Kozhar also met with the chairmen of the upper and lower Houses of Parliament of the Republic of Tajikistan M. Ubaydulloev and Sh. Zuhurov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Hamrokhon Zarifi.
It should be noted that the relations between the two countries are traditionally friendly and constructive and characterized by mutual understanding in the discussion and solution of urgent issues of bilateral cooperation. Ukraine and the Republic of Tajikistan also share similar positions on key issues of international policy and security, as well as mutual support in international organizations.
